Workshop #22 – EPSN 2025

Introduction

The European Performing Science Night (EPSN) is based on the combination of scientific excellence and performing arts as a common language. The event involves the Computer Vision Center (CVC), the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM), and the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). The aim of this initiative is to reduce the distance between science and society, bringing the public closer to researchers and their work, the benefits they bring to society and their impact on everyday life in an experiential and emotional way.

A workshop that merges art and science

The Épica Foundation offers up to 30 scholarships to selected creatives to participate in the art-science workshop, which will take place from September 8 to 28, 2025, both dates included.

They are decoding the ocean’s DNA, could it be related to ours? Could AI find such strange marine DNA that it proves octopuses come from space? Could AI discover a sunken city and reconstruct its entire history, culture, and language using only data from the seabed?
What if one day AI understands marine sounds so well that it decides to respond to a whale… and the whale answers? Could AI analyze life patterns in deep-sea trenches and use them as a model to search for alien life on planets with underground oceans?

What if we never truly left the water? What if we simply forgot how to listen to it? These are some of the questions we’ll explore during the workshop, all with the help of artificial intelligence.

This workshop will focus on exploring these complex dynamics, seeking strategies to foster a harmonious coexistence between natural and artificial ecosystems.

Creation process of the EPSN 2024 edition

The exhibition

The workshop culminates in a public exhibition showcasing the results of the art and science workshop developed over three intense weeks of work. These results will be officially pitched on Friday 26 September as part of European Researchers’ Night, an initiative taking place simultaneously in more than 400 cities in Europe and beyond. The presentation will be repeated on Saturday 27 September.

The event combines scientific excellence with artistic languages, giving the public a central role: to contribute, interact and actively participate. After the exhibition, attendees are invited to the Performaforum, an open space for debate in which the results shown and the creative process itself are reflected upon, with the direct participation of the public. In the 2025 edition of EPSN, scientists from the Computer Vision Centre, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and the Institut de Ciències del Mar will actively contribute to a debate dedicated to the oceans, water and artificial intelligence.
