Falsas Memorias 2.0

The Zetsky Theater in residence

In 2016 the workshop Memoirs of Jalena of Savoy took place in Cetinje, Montenegro. Three years later, the Fura dels Baus returns to work with the actors and theater technicians Zetsky to prepare a workshow that will open the MIT Festival, Montenegro International Theater Festival, with the support of the European initiative EU Collective Plays.

This project revolves around false memory. The story of Jalena of Savoy, queen of Italy for 46 years (1900 to 1946), which occupies the period of the World Wars, is told through a series of fictional characters who are supposed to have known her. In addition, this new edition of the workshop adds the theme of Transhumanism, or the physical and mental improvements that human beings can achieve through science and technology. Through Transhumanism we see how the Second World War is nothing more than the search for the genome of Jalena of Savoy by the SS. The Kalliópê app, a massive interaction app for live audiences, participated in the narration of the workshow, which helped create a second narrative during the development of the workshow.

False memory has become an object of scientific study. If we consider memory as part of a cognitive system that registers, stores, processes and retrieves information regarding experience or knowledge, we can appreciate how it is presented with different levels of precision and, sometimes, with dangerous imprecision. In the past two decades, psychological research has attempted to define what we know as false memory. This project and the workshow that closes it aim to explore from the scenic point of view, the questions that science investigates based on its methodology.
